The Case for Small Goals

It’s easy to get caught up in goal setting — to focus on the big picture, end game vision. And, that’s a great place to begin! Look to the future and see where you want to be. But, those big goals and ideas can quickly become overwhelming. It can feel like too much, like we won’t be able to make it.

The reality is that breaking goals down into smaller, bite-sized pieces is a key element in actually achieving those goals.

Right now, I can’t write a novel. I can, however, write for 10 minutes every day. Once I accomplish that and incorporate it into my daily routine, I will reassess and set a new, small goal. One step at a time on my way to the big-picture goal.

SMART goal setting dictates that goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.

Let’s look at my novel-writing goal again. The specifics: 10 minutes, every day, 30 days. The measurable: 10 minutes. The achievable: I know that I have 10 minutes a day to dedicate to this task. The realistic: Again, I know I have 10 minutes a day to dedicate. The timeliness: I will do this for 30 days and set a new goal (or not if I need to practice more!).

So, I want to encourage you to take that small bite, to take that small step on your way to meeting your goals.

We are taking June as our month for movement and play. Now that summer is here, it’s time to really get moving and incorporate more playtime back into our lives. The goal, at least 5 minutes of movement or play each day for the next 4 weeks. As for the specifics, we’re sharing a calendar with suggestions for each day. Take the ones you like, ignore and replace the ones that don’t resonate for you! If you have other ideas, please, share them in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Happy moving and happy playing!
